Cop convicted in Mumbai rape case

Mumbai, April. 3 (PTI): A sessions court today convicted a former police constable on the charge of raping a minor girl at the Marine Drive police chowki last year.

The court would decide on the quantum of punishment after hearing arguments from both sides.

Constable Sunil More was charged with raping a 17-year -old girl at the police chowki, near the state secretariat, on April 21 last year.

More was suspended the same day and dismissed from service three days later.

According to the prosecution, the victim and her boyfriend were taken to the police chowki by the watchman of a nearby apartment for allegedly engaging in an objectionable act.

More, who was on duty at the police chowki, summoned the girl inside and allegedly raped her. According to the girl, the constable was drunk at the time.

The trial began in the court of Additional Sessions Judge K U Chandiwal here last October.

Advocate Ujjwal Nikam was appointed Special Public Prosecutor in the case by the state. The defence team comprised advocates Prakash Wagh, Vivek Sudade and Milan Desai.

A total of twenty-seven witnesses were brought in by the prosecution while the defence did not examine its own witnesses.

The Bombay High Court, which refused bail to More, had set the deadline of April 30 for the trial to conclude.
